Overview
Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) entered Early Access in late 2024 and immediately became one of the most-discussed games in the action RPG genre. Developed by Grinding Gear Games, it builds on the legacy of the original — itself a genre benchmark — while introducing an entirely new campaign, a revamped skill system, and a refreshed visual identity. Gameplay: What's New and What's Familiar
PoE2 retains the core identity of its predecessor: deep build customization, a massive passive skill tree, and punishing but rewarding combat. However, the changes are significant:
- New skill gem system: Active skills are now socketed directly into skill gems, not gear. This is a massive quality-of-life improvement that makes building characters feel more intentional.
- Slower, weightier combat: PoE2 deliberately slows things down from the screen-clearing chaos of late-game PoE1. Bosses have multi-phase encounters with telegraphed attacks that reward attention and positioning.

The Campaign
The story campaign spans three acts in Early Access (with more planned). The writing is a step up from the original — cutscenes are cinematic, voice acting is strong, and the world-building feels more cohesive. Expect 25–40 hours for your first playthrough, depending on pace and exploration.
The campaign difficulty is notably higher than most ARPGs at launch. Deaths will happen, especially on bosses. If you're used to breezing through story modes, prepare to slow down and learn enemy patterns.
Endgame (Current State)
At Early Access launch, the endgame is solid but admittedly lighter than a fully shipped title. The Atlas passive tree and map system return in familiar form. There are enough activities to keep dedicated players busy, but players expecting the full endgame breadth of PoE1's years of content may feel the edges. This is expected and the developers have been transparent about roadmap additions.
Graphics & Performance
Visually, PoE2 is a significant upgrade. Environments are detailed, lighting is atmospheric, and character models are markedly more polished. Performance is stable on modern hardware at recommended settings, though the game can be demanding during particle-heavy encounters. Optimization is ongoing as part of the Early Access process.
Monetization
PoE2 uses the same cosmetic-only monetization model as its predecessor. Nothing affecting gameplay is sold. Stash tabs — which are sold separately — remain a meaningful quality-of-life consideration for dedicated players, though the game is fully playable without them.

Who Is It For?
PoE2 in Early Access is ideal for players who enjoy deep RPG systems, don't mind working with incomplete content, and want to help shape a game through player feedback. It's not ideal for players who want a polished, complete product from day one — wait for full release if that's your preference.

Even in Early Access, Path of Exile 2 is one of the most ambitious and mechanically satisfying ARPGs in years. Grinding Gear Games has laid an exceptional foundation. If you're an ARPG fan, it's worth every minute of your time right now. If you're patient, the full release promises to be something special.
